D-Link DWL-G700AP Wireless Access Point, 802.11g, 54MbpsI am well pleased with the purchase.
It did light up, but that's about all.The Seller would not accept it back claiming there is nothing wrong with it. The item would not work for me, even after spending a lot of time with a Tech. from the Company and my own ISP provider. I find this to be very poor customer service and will never buy from them again. Beware of this Seller.
This product seems to function ONLY as a Wireless Access Point. That is to say, it can take your wired system to wireless. This can NOT act as a bridge, nor, I suspect a repeater. Caveat emptor.
D-Link products have been straightforward to configure and use, but not this one.I did not want to change the addresses on the hardwired network at home so I hooked this access point up to a laptop directly, just a lan cable between the laptop and the access point, nothing else connected. Now I could log in to the access point and start configuration. MS Internet Explorer 7 on my windows laptop (XP SP2) was what I tried to use first. This always generated an error message and did not make the changes on the page. Google on another computer to see how to do this. Set the static IP address on the laptop to be one number higher than the default access point IP address (in the rightmost portion of the IP address). I have many D-LINK products (router, switches) and so went with this access point. Went to manual mode, made multiple changes on each page, and then clicked on the "apply" button.
In the configuration I had, I was connecting to a wired network with a router. Ran through the configuration wizard, but it did not seem to work. Configured the "LAN" to automatically get an IP address, and configured the WAN to have DHCP off. I was not able to make progress at all. You have to change the IP address of the laptop to do this. After some experimentation, found that I could change one parameter and then hit apply, and the changes would be made.
IE constantly complained about not being connected and kept taking itself offline. Switched over to using Safari browser on windows laptop. Took a while to find that this worked consistently, and slow progress to configure this one change at a time, but once I found this approach, got the thing configured and installed. Everything seems to work now.
The signal from repeater to PC would always be good. The router has always worked fine. We had been using the D-Link Wireless Repeater in conjunction with the D-Link DI-524 Wireless Router. you just could not get to the Internet. The repeater would work for a few minutes, or maybe a few hours, or maybe all day. But then, inevitably, it would have to be power-cycled because the wireless PC would no longer be able to connect to it. On the advice of a seasoned IT pro, I replaced the repeater with this Access Point. It came up working from the beginning and has not failed in three weeks of daily use.
